Certification System

The South Portland School District has decided to eliminate the position of certification coordinator, shifting the work to the certification committee, supplemented by clerical and administrative support. The MEA-RA voted to oppose this decision and to recommend that the Board of Education reconsider. But since the decision was driven by budget priorities, we need to prepare for the implementation of a new system.

The certification committee has seats for three teachers: one from the elementary level, one from the middle school level, and one from the high school level. To date, only an elementary teacher has applied. The committee cannot function (legally) without two more teachers. If no one from the middle or high school applies, two more elementary teachers could fill the spots, but it is obviously preferable to have representatives from different grade ranges.

If any teacher -- especially a middle or high school teacher -- has any interest in exploring the possibility of (getting the stipend for) this position, she/he should contact Superintendent Godin at 871-0555 or supt@spsd.org
